Incentive & Rebate Schemes

South Korea promotes foreign audio-visual works through their various incentives, tax exemption, and rebates. Many productions have taken advantage of this through the years (including: Marvel's Black Panther & Age of Ultron, Sense 8 - Seasons 1&2, Apple TV, NETFLIX, etc.).

The programs are not limited to high budget productions, and you may even qualify for multiple incentives and rebates from different regions. Check below for general details from major regions or contact us for the most recent information on all the regions throughout Korea.

KOFIC Location Incentive for Foreign Audio-visual Works

KOFIC

Korea Film Council (KOFIC) offers a LOCATION INCENTIVE for feature films, television series and documentaries developed and produced by a foreign production company, in which the allocation of foreign capital in the production cost exceeds 80%.

Amount of Grant (% related to the total qualified production expenditure)

  • 25% rebate : Shoot more than 10 days in Korea
    Spend more than 0.8 billion KRW(700,000 USD)
     

  • 20% rebate : Shoot more than 3 days in Korea
    Spend between 50 million KRW(44,000 USD) and 0.8 billion KRW(700,000 USD)
     

  • Maximum grant is capped at 200 million KRW(176,000 USD). However, depending on your total spend and the type of production, the cap may increase.

Eligible Works

  • Feature film : a consecutive set of images or video on film, disks, or digital medium, with minimum runtime of 70 minutes produced for public viewing at a cinema, screening facilities or similar places and/or through on-line streaming.
     

  • Television series : a series of dramas or shows produced for television broadcast or on-line streaming, with a pre-planned set number of episodes sharing a common theme or structure.
     

  • Documentary : a documentary produced for viewing at a cinema, screening facilities or similar places, television, or on-line.

SFC - REGIONAL INCENTIVE

SFC

Seoul Film Commission (SFC) offers production cost support for international productions with minimum 60 minutes running time, and shooting 4 or more days in the city of Seoul. 

Amount of Grant (% related to the total qualified production expenditure spent in Seoul)

  • 30% rebate : Shoot more than 4 days in Seoul
     

  • Maximum grant is capped at 300 million KRW(265,000 USD). However, depending on your total spend and the type of production, the cap may increase.

IFC - REGIONAL INCENTIVE

IFC

Incheon Film Commission (SFC) offers production cost support for international productions with minimum 60 minutes running time, and shooting 5 or more days in the city of Seoul. 

Amount of Grant (% related to the total qualified production expenditure spent in Incheon)

  • 50% rebate : Shoot more than 15 days in Incheon
     

  • 40% rebate : Shoot more than 10 days in Incheon
     

  • 30% rebate : Shoot more than 5 days in Incheon
     

  • Maximum grant is capped at 100 million KRW(88,000 USD). However, depending on your total spend and the type of production, the cap may increase.
